Tressette is played with 40 cards from an Italian-suited deck. The cards are ranked as follows from highest to lowest: 3 - 2 - Ace - King (Re) - Knight (Cavallo) - Knave (Fante) - 7 - 6 - 5 - 4.It is also possible to play with French-suited cards, by removing the 8s, 9s and 10s from a standard deck with 52 cards. The goal in Tressette is to win tricks with valuable cards. Also winning the last trick earns you a point. When playing the variation with combinations (Tressette con l'accuso), you also earn points for certain combinations of cards in your hand.
When playing with 4 players, each player is dealt 10 cards. The game is played with 2 teams of 2 players sitting opposite of each other. After playing all cards in their hand, each player calculates their score based on the cards in the won tricks, and the combinations if applicable. The player who won the last trick gets an additional point. Players can only score integer numbers, so the scores are rounded to the nearest integer.
The first player reaching the target score wins. The target score can vary between 11, 21 and 31 but is often chosen to be 21.
