He made his feature film debut in the drama Halls of Anger (1970) followed by year later with his first lead in The Last Picture Show (1971). This was quickly succeeded by a string of leading roles in dramas. He went on to receive the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as an alcoholic singer in Crazy Heart (2009).
