Né le 26 décembre 1937 à Liverpool (Royaume-Uni), Conway est le fils d’un chimiste, technicien de laboratoire. Élève exceptionnellement doué, il développe très tôt le goût des mathématiques. Après des études secondaires brillantes, il entre au Gonville and Caius College de l’université de Cambridge et y obtient son diplôme de bachelor en 1959.
