In Europe, we therefore usually employ the abbreviation USA, limiting US (which we understand to be an informal styling) to adjectives, e.g. US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Army, US dollar ...
It is unconventional in America to use a 'dot' between the hour and minutes of a time. Americans typically use a colon. I, in fact, don't know of anyone in America other than @AthomSfere that uses a dot. –

When several states within North America all united to form a single government, they called themselves the "United States of America". Some people abbreviate this as "United States", others as "America", others as "USA".
21. On the one side, the USA is just one country. Logic says it should be, then, singular, just like the United Kingdom is. Example: The USA owns this domain. On the other side, if I however expand "the USA" to "the United States of America", I'd tend towards using plural — the noun the verb agrees with, "States," is definitely plural. Example:

People from other countries often say "the USA" and "America" much more than we do. Anything without "the" when using U.S. or United States is wrong.
