The common blackbird (Turdus merula) is a species of true thrush. It is also called the Eurasian blackbird (especially in North America, to distinguish it from the unrelated New World blackbirds), or simply the blackbird where this does not lead to confusion with a similar-looking local species.
Male Blackbirds are black with a bright orange-yellow beak and yellow eye-ring. Females are brown often with spots and streaks on their breasts and brown beak. The Blackbird is one of the most common UK birds and one of the most striking. Its mellow song is also a favourite.

It is found from the Atlantic and some of its islands (Azores, Madeira, Canaries, occupied by two subspecies, but absent from Iceland) to the Volga in the East. To the North it is found up to the mid level of the Scandinavian Peninsula.
