Fils du tsar Boris III, mort dans des circonstances restées mystérieuses, et de Jeanne de Savoie, il monte sur le trône en 1943. Il est chassé du pouvoir, sans avoir abdiqué formellement, par les forces soviéto-communistes en 1946.
