Hamilton, city, seat (1803) of Butler county, southwestern Ohio, U.S., on the Great Miami River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Cincinnati. In 1794 a town called Fairfield was laid out adjoining Fort Hamilton, an outpost used against Indians. Fairfield was later renamed for Alexander Hamilton.

History. Since 1791. Hamilton was founded in 1791 as Fort Hamilton, named after the Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. The fort served as a supply station for the troops of Generals Arthur St. Clair and Anthony Wayne.
