Thomas Andrew Hendricks was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 21st Vice President of the United States; from March 1885 to November 1885. Born to a farmer in Ohio, Hendricks was brought up in Shelby County in Indiana, and graduated from Hanover College.
After losing his seat in Congress, Hendricks in 1855 accepted an appointment from President Franklin Pierce to become commissioner of the General Land Office in the Interior Department, a post he held through 1859.
