Rote and regime no longer rule. You can’t control an idea. That is why, at Rugby, the two words ‘fine disregard’ have resonance. They refer to the act of the boy – William Webb- Ellis – who, in 1823, picked up the soccer ball and ran with it, thus creating the worldwide game of Rugby.
As one of the top academic schools in Britain, teaching and learning is at the core of what we do. Students at Rugby have the benefit of fantastic educational facilities and highly qualified staff teaching GCSE, A Level and the IB Diploma.

A brief history of Rugby School. At least two centuries of Rugby’s history are written in the stones and other monuments to tradition that stand around the School Close, where in 1823, local lad William Webb Ellis, with a fine disregard for the rules of football, took the ball in his arms and ran with it, originating the game of rugby football.
The Admissions Department can arrange personal visits during the term (Tuesday to Friday). Please try to give us at least one week’s notice. Such visits can include a meeting with a senior member of the Admissions team and a tour of the school with our pupils and lunch in a boarding house.
Sport at Rugby. Rugby majors on the five core sports of cricket, hockey, rugby, netball, and tennis with athletics in the Trinity Term. Our close links with professional sports organisations such as Leicester Tigers RFC, Warwickshire Country Cricket Club and Wasps Super League netball help those talented students to progress.
