2 mai 2007 · Your initial question was about a possible difference in meaning between using "for" and not using it. This tells me that you have heard both in the past and wondered at their meanings. The meaning is simply that "for how long" isn't considered "good" grammar although it's used colloquially in conversational speech all the time.
27 mai 2015 · Modwoman in the attic. Yes，I was asking can I simply just ask "how long" not 'how long does it take' nor ' for how long does it take'. You still haven't given us much context. In most conversations in which the desired response is " (It takes) thirty minutes" simply asking "How long?" would sound odd, abrupt, or confusing.

(doesn't care for = doesn't like) In English we would use the construction, "to bay at the moon" - "He's complaining about the price of petrol; he is baying at the moon - it's supply and demand that set the price."

I agree with that. In BE, too, it's very easy to cause unintentional offence by using "since when" wrongly. Even in post #6, "Since when have you been interested in science ...
