When Shane Bieber was throwing hard fastballs for his Laguna Hills High School baseball team, the scouts in the crowd were pointing radar guns at the baseball coming out of his hand like cops on a speed trap. They weren’t that impressed. His velocity was in the low to mid80s, nice for a kid, but not fast enough for college or the pros.
