Thirdly, Nivelle publicized far too much of his intentions. His purpose was to inspire French soldiers, and the nation as a whole, and in the short run he succeeded. British and French senior officers alike shared the same concerns as French politicians, but Nivelle's promises had their desired effect in the lower ranks, where morale reached levels not seen since the summer of 1914. French ...
17 juin 2019 · Jun 17, 2019. #2. It is possible that other battles show Wellington's abilities better, but Waterloo was by far the most significant and I have to give my vote to Waterloo. Napoleon was decisively defeated once and for all and while he never really stood a chance against the 7th Coallition, Wellington had the honor of delivering the fatal blow.

Depending on the source or maybe location of the source, I've heard the US entry into WW1 either downplayed in terms of impact on that war or perhaps overplayed. So how great was the impact really, would the outcome of the war have been radically different had the US remained ...
20 déc. 2020 · They were a result essentially (but not entirely) as a result of disastrous losses in the Nivelle Offensive in April 1917. The 'relieve pressure on Verdun' argument is a little misleading, as the French attacked (very successfully it should be remembered) on the first day of Somme. In much reduced numbers than originally planned, due of course ...

Because of his high prestige as a soldier's soldier, Pétain served briefly as Army Chief of Staff (from the end of April 1917). He then became Commander-in-Chief of the French army, replacing General Nivelle, whose Chemin des Dames offensive failed in April 1917, thereby provoking widespread mutinies in the French Army. Pétain put an end to ...

A French wheat harvest that had averaged 255 million bushels before the war was down to just 105 million bushels in 1917. "France," Prime Minister Paul Painleve declared on the eve of his removal in November 1917, "is at the end of its resistance." Troop morale hadn't ...
17 juin 2018 · Hindenburg Line reinforced with multiple forward and firezones , earthworks and pre positioned gun positions almost destroyed French Army in 1917 Nivelle Offensive. I lost count of futile Italian attacks to pierce Austrian lines on Isanzo River at Italian Front between 1915-1917. As mentioned above Kursk was an extremely effective defensive structure that soaked German offensive in 1943. And ...
16 févr. 2022 · Petain was the more defensive commander who better understood how to manage the French troops in ways that the other generals didn't and that Nivelle was something unique in that he shared Joffre's offensive mindset, while favoring the use of artillery as the hammer to break the German lines. The full level of the criticism that might be ...
