Chief Dan George OC (born Geswanouth Slahoot; July 24, 1899 – September 23, 1981) was a chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, a Coast Salish band whose Indian reserve is located on Burrard Inlet in the southeast area of the District of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He also was an actor, musician, poet and author.

A school in Toronto , Ontario and another in Abbotsford , British Columbia , as well as a theatre in Victoria , British Columbia, bear his name — a testament to the ongoing influence that his works have had on various communities.
Chief Dan George died on September 23, 1981, in Vancouver at the age of 82. In 1982, a collection of his poetry was released as My Spirit Soars. While George’s health had been declining the previous years, his son said his death came down to the death of his beloved wife a decade prior, saying his father died of a broken heart.
