I would agree that he was startled awake sounds better (at least in BE). The OED gives some examples of startle as an intransitive verb, but I have never come across this use.

I've been reading a lot of Edwardian (1900-20 approx) fiction recently and have been surprised to find that the past participle of awake was formerly awoke ("I have awoke"). I've come across it numerous times so it's definitely not a mistake.
16 mars 2019 · Here, I think either would work, but there may be a slight difference: "Tom fainted." is an action that happens in a moment during the time you slept/were sleeping and "Tom was watching." is an 'ongoing' activity which lasted for the time you were sleeping/were asleep. By the way, in all your examples, I'd prefer "While" to "When".

My dictionary gives as an example, "He presented a brave face to the world." In this case, "present to" means "to show". Just looking at my dictionary I can see that "present" is a tricky word.
