Jefferson City (originally named Mossy Creek) is a city in Jefferson County, Tennessee, United States. It is part of the Morristown Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census the population was 8,419.
About Jefferson City, Tennessee. Our History. The Foundation of Mossy Creek. Jefferson City was first founded in 1788 under the name Mossy Creek. The first settlers of the area, Adam and Elizabeth Sharkey Peck, floated down the Holston River from Virginia with their seven children.
Originally known as Mossy Creek, Jefferson City has been a staple of East Tennessee since the late 1700s. It’s the largest of our towns and is home to Carson-Newman University and the Historic Mossy Creek District.

The Jefferson County Historical Society (JCHS) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and safekeeping of the county’s historical structures, documents, artifacts, and heritage.
The Historic Mossy Creek features a unique view of small town living as the commercial district of the former town of Mossy Creek, Tennessee, now Jefferson City. Some of the buildings date as far back as the 1800s and include an old Movie theater, Mercantile, and eateries.
