She rose to worldwide prominence when she was convicted of second-degree murder in Springfield, Missouri, for the death of her mother Dee Dee Blanchard, who had subjected Gypsy-Rose to lifelong physical, mental, and medical abuse.

Born Clauddine Pitre in Chackbay, Louisiana, near the Gulf Coast, on May 3, 1967, the first of two children, to Claude A. Pitre Jr. (born 1938) and Emma Lois Pitre (née Gisclair; 1938-1997).
