Interviews with Newhart, Pleshette, and director Dick Martin reveal that the final scene was kept a secret from the cast and most of the crew. A fake ending was written to throw off the tabloids that involved Dick Loudon going to heaven after being hit with a golf ball and talking to God, played by George Burns or George C. Scott .
To protect the secret of the ending, a fake script was leaked to the press. In it, after Bob gets hit by a golf ball, he dies, goes to Heaven and meets God played by George Burns. Right before Larry, Darryl and Darryl show up, four other former townsfolk show up and are talking to Dick.
