Dr. Dorothy Hansine Andersen was the first physician to identify cystic fibrosis as a disease and, together with her research team, created the first tests to diagnose it. She also spent nearly a decade examining glycogen storage disease, and studied cardiac malformations in great detail.

As a tribute to her identification of cystic fibrosis, in 2002, 39 years after her death, Dorothy Hansine Andersen was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame for her contributions to medical science.

Dorothy Andersen, MD. Dr. Andersen is unquestionably one of the most important figures in the history of cystic fibrosis. Her contributions to the field, including her discovery of CF in 1938, sparked decades of scientific progress that have transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
For her time and place in history, Dorothy Hansine Andersen was as rare as she was brilliant. When only some 5% of practicing physicians in the United States were women, she held both an MD degree (from Johns Hopkins University) and a Doctor of Medical Science degree (from Columbia).
Dorothy Hansine Andersen was an American pathologist and pediatrician who was the first person to identify cystic fibrosis and the first American physician to describe the disease. In 2001 she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
