Balsall Heath was mainly farmland some distance away from Birmingham. However, the people moving into this developing town needed food from the countryside and the route from the Vale of Evesham lay across the heath.
20 mars 2018 · Balsall Heath was historically an area of farmland and commons sandwiched between the ancient settlement of Moseley and the ever-expanding town of Birmingham.
Balsall Heath stands on clay. Before 1767 when the Moseley Road was turnpiked, this part of the route to Alcester was notoriously treacherous in wet weather as the clay turned to slimy mud. In winter the road grew ever wider as travellers avoided the worsening conditions along the original route.
Balsall Heath is an inner-city area of Birmingham, West Midlands, England. It has a diverse cultural mix of people and is the location of the Balti Triangle.
Our little Farm was opened in 1980 and is an inner-city oasis providing local families with access to animals that they otherwise might not see. It is a valued community asset in Balsall Heath with visitors who came as children now bringing their own little.

From what was then the rolling farmland of Worcestershire, Tolkien would have been able to see the industrial city of Birmingham in the distance, spewing up its black smoke from the chimneys of Sparkbrook, Alum Rock and Balsall Heath. This view of industrial Birmingham may have been where the image of Mordor was first inspired.
