It is for lists that are numbered or in some way show that they have a specific ordering. By default ul gets you bullet pointed lists and ol numbered lists, although this can be edited in css.

16 juin 2023 · I have a ordered list where I would like the initial number to be 6. I found that this was supported (now deprecated) in HTML 4.01 using the start attribute.
13 août 2015 · Modern Approach (2021) - ::marker pseudo-element. The introduction of the ::marker pseudo-element makes changing the color (and other styling) of numbers in an ordered list far simpler.

2 mai 2012 · 1. Moshe's solution is great but the problem may still exist if you need to put the list inside a div. (read: CSS counter-reset on nested list) This style could prevent that issue: ol > li {. counter-increment: item; } ol > li:first-child {. counter-reset: item;
Perhaps there was an assumption when writing the CSS spec that nobody would want to number items in text that flows like a paragraph. But in the "legal fine print" kind of text I was styling this kind of numbering was exactly what I needed. The solution was to float:left on the li. ol {. list-style-type: decimal; }
