  1. Re: Meaning of "independent" in 1841. Being 'of independent means' would mean that the person did not have to work for a living. They might be living off investments and/or rents from property. Another possibility I've seen is being old/infirm and unable to work and being supported by the children.

  3. Occupation listed as Independent. « on: Friday 25 March 11 15:22 GMT (UK) ». While looking for an individual (relative) in the Scottish 1841 census I came across what I thought to be unusual. Under occupation is shown Independent. Can anyone explain this occupation or is this in reference to his living arrangement?

My 3x great grandfather was the Rev John Cockin who was minister at the Lane Independent Chapel at Holmfirth for 43 years from 1806-1849. Although he died in Halifax, he asked to be buried at Holmfirth and the newspaper report of his funeral confirms that he was.

I think that actually the entry is from the Meifod Main Congregational Chapel rather than the one the booklet is for as I think there are two, one being Meifod Main Independent - Main Ganol (that the booklet is for) and the other being Meifod Main Independent (Congregational) having looked on Genuki they seem to be two different chapels.

I think you will have to check with the Gwent Record Office in Cwmbran to check what records are available. There are however, baptisms from 1787 - 1833 available online courtesy of the IGI.
