Wallsend derives its name as the location of the end of Hadrian’s Wall. The town hosted the fort Segedunum which protected the eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall. In dedication to the Romans, Latin signs are dotted throughout the town. Much of Wallsend’s early industry was driven by coal mining.
Wallsend (/ ˌ w ɔː l z ˈ ɛ n d /) is a town in North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England, at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. It has a population of 43,842 and lies 4 miles (6.5 kilometres) east of Newcastle upon Tyne .

Wallsend, famed as a shipbuilding town from the nineteenth century has ancient origins. It is of course named from its location at the eastern end of Hadrian’s Wal l and was the site of a Roman fort.
