They usually give you a list of a few major car rental car agencies and don’t tell you which one until you pay. Direct as the company I work for offers a better deal when booking direct, than third party sites.
Car rental prices change by the day and are very much tied to supply and demand. If a company does have many cars to rent on a particular day, they will raise rates to squeeze every nickel out of a rental. So if you're trying to rent in a high-demand period, expect to pay more.

Please do NOT rent a car seat. You don’t know the history, cleaning, or anything that was done to it. If you’re flying, your kids obviously have their own seat so just take your seats on the plane with you. They should sit in a car seat on the plane anyway.

We just got back from spending 2 weeks in the south of France and it was amazing having a rental car. Every place we stayed had parking so it made it easy to come and go as we pleased.

I’m not blind to the stressors of an older car on the road..we’ve replaced our alternator during a cross country road trip with everything we owned inside the car, with 260k miles on it. But getting your car checked out before you go is a good middle ground.
