SIGISMUND. (1812-1871) Pianiste autrichien né à Genève. Élève de Hummel et de Kalbrenner, Thalberg donne en 1836 à Paris, lors d'une absence de Liszt, un premier concert qui fait sensation. Deux partis se forment, qui mettent les rivaux en présence (1837) : Liszt l'emporte.

Sigismond Thalberg (born Jan. 8, 1812, Geneva, Switz.—died April 27, 1871, Posillipo, Italy) was the leading rival of Franz Liszt as a virtuoso pianist. Thalberg began performing at the age of 14 in Viennese salons.
