Modern philosophy, in the history of Western philosophy, the philosophical speculation that occurred primarily in western Europe and North America from the 17th through the 19th century. The modern period is marked by the emergence of the broad schools of empiricism and rationalism and the epochal.
The main theme of postwar Continental philosophy was the enthusiastic reception in France of Nietzsche and Heidegger and the consequent rejection of metaphysics and the Cartesian rationalism inherited by Sartre and his fellow existentialists.
To assess the main trends of philosophy in the world today, the author avoids using a simple geographical framework and favours instead a schema that identifies philosophical fields or loci with questions being presently researched and discussed.
