Dora Maar, pseudonyme d’Henriette Theodora Markovitch, née le 22 novembre 1907 à Paris et morte le 16 juillet 1997 dans la même ville [3], est une photographe et artiste peintre française. Elle fut l'une des amantes et muses du peintre Pablo Picasso, rôle qui a longtemps occulté l'ensemble de son œuvre.
Le Portrait de Dora Maar trône au premier plan de cette composition murale, presqu’au centre, aux côtés d’un autre portrait majeur conservé au Centre Pompidou, à Paris : Portrait de femme, réalisé en 1938. Là encore, l’anatomie corporelle et faciale est ébranlée.
