Wifredo Lam est né le 8 décembre 1902 à Sagua la Grande, à Cuba. Il est le huitième enfant de Lam-Yam, né à Canton vers 1820 et ayant émigré vers les Amériques en 1860 et d'Ana Serafina Castilla, née en 1862 à Cuba et descendante métis de familles originaires du Congo et d'Espagne.
