Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA (/ ˈ l aʊ r i / LAO-ree; 1 November 1887 – 23 February 1976) was an English artist. His drawings and paintings mainly depict Pendlebury, Greater Manchester (where he lived and worked for more than 40 years) as well as Salford and its vicinity.
The best collection of his work is in the Lowry, a large arts centre that opened in Salford in 2000. It includes a number of disturbing fetishistic drawings of women that came to light after Lowry's death; they have been interpreted as part of his ‘melancholy and tortured’ view of the world.
