He was born in 1213. After the death of his father, al-Musta'sim succeeded to the throne in late 1242. He is noted for his opposition to the rise of Shajar al-Durr to the Egyptian throne during the Seventh Crusade.

al-Mustaʿṣim (born 1212—died 1258) was the last ʿAbbāsid caliph in Baghdad (reigned 1242–58). Ineffectual himself and surrounded by advisers with conflicting opinions, al-Mustaʿṣim presented no strong defense against the Mongol conqueror Hülegü, grandson of Genghis Khan.

Biography. The last ‘Abbasid caliph , reigned from 1242 and 1258 (AH 640 - AH 656). al-Musta’sim surrendered to the Mongol khan Hulagu (q.v.) in 1258 (AH 656) and the city of Baghdad was sacked.
