Devadatta (« Dieu donné » en sanskrit), cousin et membre de la communauté monastique du Bouddha, est surtout connu pour avoir été l'ennemi acharné de ce dernier et le mauvais disciple du sangha [1]. Il aurait tenté à au moins trois reprises de tuer Gautama et fut à l’origine d’une tentative de schisme.
Devadatta was by tradition a Buddhist monk, cousin and brother-in-law of Gautama Siddhārtha. The accounts of his life vary greatly, but he is generally seen as an evil and divisive figure in Buddhism, who led a breakaway group in the earliest days of the religion.

Devadatta (flourished 6th century bce, India) was a Buddhist monk who sought to reform the sangha (monastic community) by imposing upon it a stricter code of life. He was a cousin of the Buddha.

5 févr. 2018 · According to Buddhist tradition, the disciple Devadatta was the Buddha's cousin and also brother to the Buddha's wife, Yasodhara. Devadatta is said to have caused a split in the sangha by persuading 500 monks to leave the Buddha and follow him instead.

Devadatta confronted the Buddha over a number of ascetic practices (dhutanga) which he sought to have made compulsory, but which the Buddha decided should be optional. The enmity between the two was not limited to this life, but each of Devadatta's efforts to overthrow the Buddha resulted in failure.
