Co-produced and originally distributed by Wim Van Leer of the Jerusalem Cinematheque, the film examines the struggle of the Israeli people to come to terms with their new identity, Jewish life in the kibbutzim and the treatment of minorities in the new state.
Chris Marker’s 1960 voyage to Israel resulted in one of his key early works, an exploration of the then only twelve-year-old nation as a world replete with over-determined signs and meaning forged by intense geopolitical pressures and by forces of still indefinite change.
