Formed in 1960, the group originally consisted of Sam "Little Sonny" Brown, Eugene "Bird" Daughtry, Phillip "Phil" Terry and Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards. In 1969, Sam Brown was replaced as lead singer by Bobby Starr, only to rejoin the group in 1973.

That only served to give the Philadelphia quartet an edgy, instantly recognizable and highly soulful sound that Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff selected as one of their early production projects.

A year later, Samuel Brown committed suicide at the age of 54, jumping from a bridge into the Schuykill River, following a long battle with drug addiction and the loss of his wife and mother. He was laid to rest at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Wilkinsburg Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.
