Cinq jeunes hommes connus sous le nom de The Truimphs chantent dans les églises. Il s’agit d’ Eddie LeVert, Walter Williams, William Powell, Bill Isles et enfin Bobby Massey. En 1960, le groupe devient The mascots et offre le single « Miracles ». Trois ans plus tard, ils prennent le nom de The O’Jays en hommage à un fan (Eddie O’Jay).
