Powhatan was the leader of the Powhatan Confederacy, an alliance of Algonquian-speaking tribes in Virginia, when English settlers arrived in 1607. He was captured by John Smith, who claimed he was saved by his daughter Pocahontas, and later moved his capital to Matchut.
