11 nov. 2018 · Hugh McDowell, who played cello with the Electric Light Orchestra through most of the 1970s, died on 6 November 2018 at 65, after a fight with cancer. He was a classically trained musician who joined ELO in 1972 and appeared on several of their hit albums and videos.

Another sad death to report in the world of music: Hugh McDowell, known as ELO’s cellist, passed away at the age of 65. The musician joined the Electric Light Orchestra in 1972 at the age of 19, left with founder Roy Wood to found Wizzard, but returned quickly in 1973 in place of Colin Walker.

He briefly left the band with ELO founding member Roy Wood to form the glam rock band Wizzard, but returned to ELO in 1973 to replace cellist Colin Walker.
