Storyteller, researcher, songwriter, performer, and mentor, Barker was a true griot—an elder statesman of jazz and an international representative of New Orleans and African American culture.

Avant d'adopter la guitare, il prend des cours de clarinette avec Barney Bigard, de batterie avec son oncle Paul Barbarin, puis de ukulélé et de banjo. Fin des Années 1920.
