The original members included identical twin brothers Wallace "Scotty" and Walter Scott, along with Gordy Harmon, Marcus Hutson, and Nicholas Caldwell. After being invited to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1966 by Sly Stone, the group relocated to that area where they began developing a reputation as a show-stopping live act.

Beginning their career out of L.A. in 1963, the quintet recorded several singles before releasing their first album in 1970.
Then with the passing of Nicholas Caldwell and Marcus Hutson, they have continued to thrive with the trio of Wallace "Scotty" Scott, Walter Scott and Leaveil Degree. They have 33 top ten hits, over 40 charted singles, and 20 multiple gold and platinum albums.
