In 1805, with the founding of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), several casts were commissioned and purchased from Paris, France. The casts formed part of the original Academy collection on view to the public along with paintings. In the early days at the Academy, students worked in the galleries from this original collection.
As the first art museum and school in the United States, PAFA celebrates the transformative power of art and art-making. Through its world-class museum and school, PAFA nurtures and recognizes artists at every turn in their career.
