Marillion est un groupe de rock néo-progressif britannique, originaire d'Aylesbury, en Angleterre. Fer de lance du renouveau du rock progressif, il est formé en 1979 sous le nom de Silmarillion — nom emprunté à un roman de J. R. R. Tolkien, auteur du Seigneur des anneaux.
Marillion / m ə ˈ r ɪ l i ə n / are a British neo prog band, formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, in 1979. They emerged from the post-punk music scene in Britain and existed as a bridge between the styles of punk rock and classic progressive rock, becoming the most commercially successful neo-prog band of the 1980s.

Formé en 1979 par Mick Pointer (batterie) et Steve Rothery (guitare), le groupe "Silmarillion" (inspiré par le best-seller de J.R.R. Tolkien) voit le jour. Mais très vite, ce nom sera raccourci, pour des questions de droits, et deviendra le nom définitif du groupe : MARILLION.
