He was an American painter, printmaker, and draughtsman who spent the majority of his life in England, being an integral part of post WW II British art. Kitaj was one of the most prominent figures of the British Pop art movement.
Artist biography. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Kitaj studied at the Cooper Union Institute in New York in 1950-1 and 1952. As a merchant seaman in the early 1950s he visited Havana, Mexico and South America. He was a student at the Academy of Fine Art, Vienna in 1951.
21 oct. 2007 · Kitaj took his own life in the same year following a two-year battle with Parkinson's Disease, a condition that had robbed him of his ability to paint. (An unfinished memoir, Confessions of An Old Jewish Painter , was found in his effects and was published posthumously.)
