Simplified Chinese characters ( 简化字; jiǎnhuàzì) [1] are standardized Chinese characters prescribed in the Table of General Standard Chinese Characters for use in mainland China. Along with traditional Chinese characters, they are one of the two standard character sets of the contemporary Chinese written language.
An example of a traditional character simplified such that its phonetic element is totally removed is 廣 ( guǎng, meaning "extensive"), of which the internal character 黃 ( huáng) is enclosed within a 广. Simplified, the character is written without its internal phonetic element, and with no replacement: 广.
