La diffusion du Merengue a été assez rapide en République Dominicaine grâce à l'arrivée du dictateur Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1930 -1961), lequel était d'origine modeste et apréciait beaucoup ce genre musical. Il s'est servi du Merengue pour faire la promotion de sa politique en la déclarant Musique Nationale de République Dominicaine.
