As a starlet, she was very well-read and outspoken, a rare bird in 1950s Hollywood. She had opinions about literature, politics, psychology, etc., and expressed them with wit.

Shelley Winters may have made a wonderful writer or watchmaker. But the cinema is a visual medium.
