Elle monte The Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra en 1993, qui, pendant cinq ans, se produit tous les lundis soir à New-York au Visiones, club de jazz situé dans Greenwich Village, et joue dans de nombreux festivals, notamment en Europe.

With her first recording, Evanescence (1994), Schneider began developing her personal way of writing for her 18-member collective made up of many of the finest musicians in jazz today, tailoring her compositions to the uniquely creative voices of the group.
Depuis la réalisation de son précédent album, “The Thompson Fields”, Maria Schneider a travaillé avec David Bowie sur une collaboration intitulée "Sue (Or In a Season of Crime)", et en 2019, elle a été nommée NEA Jazz Master, la plus haute distinction nationale américaine dans le domaine du jazz.
