Phillips opened for the 1904–1905 school year on September 4, 1904. The school was named for Wendell Phillips (1811–1884), the staunch abolitionist and advocate for Native Americans. He was one of the leading members of the American Anti-Slavery Society.
Born in 1811, Wendell Phillips spent nearly fifty years of his life championing the fight against slavery, the ill-treatment of Native Americans, equal pay and for women and better working conditions for all workers.
History. Wendell Phillips Academy High School is named in honor of Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), an abolitionist who openly criticized Abraham Lincoln for delaying the emancipation of slaves.
