King Henry VIII Grammar School, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, [1] was one of a series of schools founded during the Reformation in England and Wales in 1542 from property seized from monasteries and religious congregations.
Welcome to King Henry VIII School, a leading, co-educational independent school in the West Midlands that serves the needs of over 1,300 pupils. The Senior School educates children aged 11 to 18 and was established in 1545 by Royal Charter.
The school was founded on 23 July 1545 by the Clerk of the Hanaper John Hales as the Free Grammar School under letters patent of King Henry VIII. [5] During the initial foundation of the school it was located in the Whitefriars' Monastery. [6]
Admission to King Henry VIII School is by selection on academic merit. All children are required to sit one of the entrance assessments described on the How to Apply page. A school reference will also be sought. We accept applications from Nursery through to Sixth Form (3-18).
It was to provide a Free Grammar School where Latin grammar was taught. The new grammar school was named after its benefactor Henry VIII who also appointed its first headmaster, Richard Oldsworthy. The school when it opened had 26 pupils, all boys aged between 7 and 14. [1]
