The Mars Pathfinder mission, designed to demonstrate a low-cost method for delivering a set of science instruments to the Red Planet, was the first wheeled vehicle to be used on any other planet in the solar system and served as the foundation for the Mars rovers of today.
Mission Overview. Mars Pathfinder was launched atop a Delta II- 7925 launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral Air Station in Florida on December 4, 1996. The launch vehicle included a Star 48 solid rocket as the third-stage booster. During the spacecraft™s seven-month journey to Mars, four trajectory correction maneuvers fine-tuned its flight path.
NASA's Mars Pathfinder mission -- the first spacecraft to land on Mars in more than 20 years and the first ever to send a rover out to independently explore the Martian landscape -- is set for touchdown July 4, initiating a new era of scientific exploration that will lead eventually to human expeditions to the red planet.
