Thomas Hardy, né le 2 juin 1840 à Stinsford, à Manchester ( Royaume-Uni ), et mort le 11 janvier 1928 à Dorchester, est un poète et écrivain britannique appartenant au courant naturaliste. Auteur devenu aujourd'hui classique, il a tout particulièrement influencé D. H. Lawrence et John Cowper Powys. Il a reçu l' ordre du Mérite en 1910 .
