À la fin des années 1950 à Châteauroux, Rachel, modeste employée de bureau, rencontre Philippe, brillant jeune homme issu d’une famille bourgeoise. De cette liaison passionnelle, mais brève, naîtra une petite fille, Chantal. Philippe refuse de se marier en dehors de sa classe sociale.
