  5. Chamitoff joined Mission Operations at the Johnson Space Center in 1995 and was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1998. In 2002, he was a member of the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations crew, where he studied and lived on the Aquarius undersea research habitat for nine days.
